1% Every Day

Every day when I go to bed, I want to be 1% better than I was when I got up.

Non Verbal Communication

Yesterday I was tired. I slept for like 2 hours Monday night and even Monday I wasn’t able to get my normal workout in and had to do a workout in my garage before bed because I had forgotten to grab a towel when I went to the office.

Not only was I tired, I was feeling sorry for myself and I just didn’t want to be at the dome for my run. I started running (slowly) and I passed a guy that I’ve seen maybe half the times I have been at the Metrodome since I started running there.

I remember him because of the odd manner in which he runs. Honestly the man looks like he has cement on his feet. Imagine someone drowning, except they aren’t in the water. Every step is a struggle.

It’s probably obvious to everyone there that this guy had a stroke… at least.

When I finished my run and was cooling down I (literally) bumped into him. He was doing push ups (using a chair as a way to modify them) and I didn’t see him because I had my eyes on the ground and was too focused on being inside my own head.

He apologized, and by the time it registered that I had bumped into him and I cleared the fog that was between the outside world and my conscious I had already gotten some distance between us. I turned around, gave him a half smile, nodded and just kept walking.

But what I hoped was conveyed in that nod was “You inspire me to never quit. Every time you lace up your shoes and run you show more intestinal fortitude than I will ever probably expend in my lifetime.”

Ten Good Reasons Why Women Should Stay Away From Weights

1. You might break a nail.

2. You could even bruise a male ego or two.

3. You’ll eat properly and still be able to lose fat. Work of the devil!

4. You’ll look more like an athlete and less like a runway model. Skeletal is sexy, right?

5. You’ll be able to lift heavy things without asking a man for help, thus upsetting the balance of the universe.

6. You will be seen in public without high heels.

7. You’ll grunt, sweat and feel sore. So unladylike!

8. You’ll be proud of your pert bum instead of being self conscious about it like a normal woman.

9. You’ll be more active and confident instead of sitting around looking pretty. What are you, some kind of feminist?

10. You’ll be stronger, leaner and sexier – and we all know where that can lead!

Habit Tracking

This is an idea I’ve been playing around with for awhile and tried this summer for myself.

When you feel you can’t do it and want to give up—DON’T! The only person capable of being in your way is yourself!

I Swear I am a Masochist

In an effort to start simulating tough mudder as much as I can. I decided to break up my Tuesday running and add push-ups (and a set of sit-ups) in between. Last night was tough, especially because my calves started cramping and I got stitches on both sides of my ribs when I was running my 5k. Still beat 30 minutes though, so I got that going for me.

This was also a great test of mental toughness, literally fighting off leg cramps and side sttiches to keep moving forward. I don’t know if I’m getting sick, but I have been a little more tired the last weekend. But all I could think of on my last couple of runs was just putting one foot in front of the other.

At one point when I couldn’t breathe because my sides hurt so bad I thought “Fuck it, if they have to scrape me off the floor and pile me on an ambulance tonight, so be it.” Probably mellow dramatic, but until you are fighting your body to breathe, you probably won’t understand.

I can’t wait until it warms up a little so I can add more things to my runs like this. I will still make an effort to hit the big 4 every week (edit: forgot pulls, do your pull-ups and pendalay rows. Thanks general_tso!), because I believe they are the best things you can do for your body.

(Remember kids, squats, dead lifts, shoulder press and bench press are your friends!)
